Queensland Smoke Alarm Legislation

Queensland households have some of the best and safest smoke alarm legislation requirements in the world.

New laws that began on the 1st of January 2017 require all new homes being built or substantially renovated to meet a number of new requirements including the installation of a smoke alarm in every bedroom as well as areas that service the bedrooms and all smoke alarms to be interconnected with each other and to be a "Photoelectric" type smoke alarm.

There are 3 roll-outs for the new laws where the following scenarios will be required to meet the legislation:

1 January 2017 - New dwellings and dwellings being substantially renovated

1 January 2022 - For dwellings being sold, leased or an existing lease renewed

           1 January 2027 - For existing dwellings
